Learning How to Retell a Story

  • Day 1: The Kindergarten class reads a version of The Gingerbread Man.
  • Day 2: Together the class retells the story: determining characters, describing the setting and sequencing important events.
  • Day 3: Students collaborate to create a class book to retell The Gingerbread Man.
  • Day 4: Class rereads their version of The Gingerbread Man.
  • The Kindergartners meet their Big Buddies. Classes meet consistently throughout the year for literacy projects.

Practicing How to Retell a Story

The Kindergarten class begins an Author Study. Discuss story elements (author, title, illustrator). Together the class retells the story, Stellaluna: determining characters, describing the setting and sequencing important events.

November

Read Swimmy by Leo Lionni. Students work with a partner to retell the story, drawing the beginning, middle and end. (1 session)

Author Studies continue.

January Week 1

Choosing Favorite Stories to Retell

  • During independent reading time, teacher models process of selecting a favorite story. Each Kindergartner selects a favorite, familiar story to retell for the literacy project. (1-2 sessions).
  • Story Elements-Characters: During a writer's workshop session, teacher models with a sample. Kindergartners draw the main characters from their stories. (1 writing session) Teachers save pictures to scan for the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 slideshow.
  • Story Elements-Setting: During a writer's workshop session, teacher models with a sample. Kindergartners draw the setting of their stories. (1 writing session) Teachers save pictures to scan for the Kid Pix Deluxe 3 slideshow.
  • Big Buddy Session: Kindergartners and Buddies read the selected favorite story together. Kindergartners share their drawings (completed in Kindergarten writer's workshop) with Buddies. Buddies write detailed descriptions of characters and setting, as shared by Kindergartners. (1 writing session)
  • In the computer lab, Kindergartners draw a self-portrait using Kid Pix Deluxe 3. (1 session)

January Week 2

Retelling Favorite Stories

  • Kindergarten Writer's Workshop: Kindergartners retell their stories by drawing the beginning, middle and ending. (2-3 writing sessions)
  • Writing Session with Big Buddies: Kindergartners use their drawings to retell stories to Buddies. Buddies write. (1 session)
  • In the computer lab, Kindergartners draw the first slide (beginning of the story) using Kid Pix Deluxe 3. (1 session) Teacher saves student work in a file.
January Week 3
  • Big Buddy Writer's Workshop: Big buddies learn how to write an "About the Author" page.
  • In the computer lab, Kindergartners draw the second slide (middle of the story) using Kid Pix Deluxe 3. (1 session) Teacher saves student work in a file.
January Week 4
  • Writing Session with Big Buddies: Big buddies share their author pages with Kindergarten buddies. Big buddies help Kindergartners write their own author pages using a template. (1 session)
  • In the computer lab, Kindergartners draw the second slide (middle of the story) using Kid Pix Deluxe 3. (1 session) Teacher saves student work in a file.
  • Kindergarten teachers add in text (from the big buddies writing session) to Kindergarten Kid Pix Deluxe 3 self portrait slides to create the Kindergarten "author" pages.
  • In the computer lab, big buddies use Kid Pix Deluxe 3 to create self portraits slides. Big buddies add text to their slides to create their big buddy "author" pages. (1 session)

February Week 1

Producing Kid Pix Deluxe 3 Slideshows

In the computer lab, big buddies use Kid Pix Deluxe 3 to create title page slides. (1 session)

February Week 2

In the computer lab, Kindergarten teachers work with big buddy classes to teach them how to sequence previously saved slides (title page, characters, setting, beginning, middle, end, and author pages) to create Kid Pix Deluxe 3 slideshows.

February Week 3 In the computer lab, big buddies continue to put Kid Pix Deluxe 3 slideshows together. Big buddies will begin adding in text to beginning, middle, and end slides. Kindergarten teachers will assist in the lab.

Recording Voices: Teachers work individually with Kindergartners to record voices to add to slides.

April

Author's Night

Students present their slideshows to families and community members at an Author's Night.
