Over the course of eight months students worked collaboratively in multi-age groups on different tasks centered on the Six Pillars of Character Traits, which include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. They were exposed to a variety of tools and resources to help them complete their projects.
This project was conceptualized from an idea that our school lacked a formal character development program. The teachers at our site felt that character development was an element that impacted the school’s overall community and climate. With this curriculum, the teachers hoped to create a positive, safe environment which would foster learning. The skills gained should not end with completion of the project, rather they are internalized and practiced throughout their daily lives.
